1907: Howard Darling residence, 3755 E. Douglas. Lumber magnate and Fairmount College benefactor Darling built this house in the then-new College Hill neighborhood; today it belongs to the nonprofit cancer support group Victory in the Valley. Howard Darling appears in the foreground of this historic photograph of the groundbreaking ceremony for Fairmount's Carnegie library; he holds the shovel. The third man from the right is the college's first president, Nathan Morrison, who died less than 24 hours after the photo was made.
