Arkansas Valley Interurban tracks, 14th & Market.
A largely African-American crew is depicted above left
laying the rails for the AVI. The line connected Wichita
to Sedgwick, Halstead, Valley Center, Newton, Hutchinson
and Bethel College; it operated as a passenger (and later
cargo-only) service until the beginning of World War II,
when its rails were torn up for scrap.
