1930: Brooks Machine Co., 225 W. Lewis. In its day, the area between Douglas and Kellogg (on the north and south) and Main and the river (east and west) was home to many industrial businesses. Dead center in the above left photo is the Brooks machine shop; the building later served as Wichita's City Arts, until that organization's new home was built in the Warren Plaza on Second Street. Also seen in the vintage photo above are a Conoco station (foreground), Lewis Street Glass (218 W. Lewis) and J.A. Blunn Paint & Glass (214 W. Lewis). In the modern photo, the Wichita Boathouse is directly to the right of the viewer. This entire area is currently in the throes of major renovation as part of the Water Walk project.
