1932: Goodrich Silvertown filling station, First & St. Francis. Tires, auto maintenance and gasoline were available at the Commercial Deco building in the above left photo. Note the bin of used tires bearing the sign: "For safety -- these tires DESTROYED with an ax!" This is due to the glut of badly-recapped (and very dangerous) tires on the market in the era. Goodrich still makes Silvertown tires in vintage molds, for use on classic cars. The site today is still occupied by an auto service station, though the original building appears to have been replaced at some point.
