Tires,
auto maintenance and gasoline were available at the Commercial
Deco building in the above left photo. Note the bin of used
tires bearing the sign: "For safety -- these tires
DESTROYED with an ax!" This is due to the glut of badly-recapped
(and very dangerous) tires on the market in the era. Goodrich
still makes Silvertown tires in vintage molds, for use on
classic cars. The site today is still occupied by an auto
service station, though the original building appears to
have been replaced at some point.
