1945:
J.C Penney Company, 130 N. Broadway. The
popular national retailer operated a store in this block
-- in first one building, then another -- for much of the
20th century. With the dawn of the era of the shopping mall,
department stores abandoned downtown in droves. Today, what
appears to be the same building still stands, clad in a
heavy, white, featureless facade.
