1953: Defenders of the Christian Faith, 2502 E. Douglas. Founded by the Rev. Dr. Gerald Winrod (aka "The Jayhawk Nazi", pictured above left with arms crossed next to street sign), the Defenders of the Christian Faith was an organization which supported racial segregation and alcohol prohibition, and opposed the teaching of evolution in public schools. Winrod was the son of a Wichita bar owner whose establishment was vandalized by temperance leader Carrie Nation; his own son, Gordon, is a well-known member of the Christian Identity movement and -- like his father -- a vociferous anti-Semite. Today the unassuming building serves as the Wichita Indochinese Center.
