1958: Cardwell Service Station, 950 N. Hillside. Vickers Petroleum developed this jet-age "hyperbolic paraboloid" service station design in 1954 and built numerous examples. Few of these "batwing" buildings exist today; the example in the above left photo has long since been razed, leaving only an empty lot.
