1978:
Wichita Board of Education Administration Building (Carleton
School), 428 S. Broadway. On
this spot in 1879 was built the First Ward School, which
was used until the 1920s, when it was replaced by this larger
building. By that time, the school had been renamed after
the popular American poet Will Carleton. The school closed
in 1946; for the rest of the facility's operational lifespan,
it was occupied by the Board of Education's offices. It
was vacated in 1993. Though a number of preservationist
and community art groups attempted to persuade the city
to spare the building, it was knocked down in 2007.
